I've been very, very busy lately, which is the reason for my non-existence on the site. I apologize, but being a two-state lawyer tends to lots and lots of traveling.

Then there's also the little bit of political blogging that I've been doing lately (although work has had me falling behind on that, too). I've also been doing some grass-roots work lobbying for a new Alabama Constitution and making some great political contacts across the state toward that effort.

Bamalaw is well. He's busy working in natural resource law and has been putting in time trying to get rid of Alabama's stupid alcohol laws (www.freethehops.org) and may actually be working on a certain presidential candidate's campaign here in Alabama.

And then there's that whole buying a first house thing we've been going through -- a nightmare there ever was one, but the house is awesome so at the end of the day I can't complain much.

Thanks to everyone who's been sending kind thoughts and wishes my way. Perhaps one day life will settle back down!

In case you missed the post, I will be disappearing for a while to study for the Mississippi Bar examination. I will resume regular appearances on the site in March.

If you like the TSO video, you will likely enjoy knowing exactly WHAT the words being spoken mean. Thus, for your edification, I present:

Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi
O Fortuna (Chorus)

O Fortuna
velut luna
statu variabilis,
semper crescis
aut decrescis; ;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.

Sors immanis
et inanis,
rota tu volubilis,
status malus,
vana salus
semper dissolubilis,
obumbrata
et velata
michi quoque niteris;
nunc per ludum
dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris.

Sors salutis
et virtutis
michi nunc contraria,
est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria.
Hac in hora
sine mora
corde pulsum tangite;
quod per sortem
sternit fortem,
mecum omnes plangite!

TRANSLATION:

(Fortune, Empress of the World)
O Fortune

O Fortune
like the moon
you are changeable
ever waxing
and waning
hateful life
first oppresses
and then soothes
as fancy takes it;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice.

Fate - monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
you are malevolent,
well-being is vain
and always fades to nothing,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague me too;
now through the game
I bring my bare back
to your villainy.

Fate is against me
in health
and virtue,
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate
strikes down the string man,
everyone weep with me!

The Sipsey Wilderness Area is located in the Bankhead National Forest, straddling the border of Winston and Lawrence Counties in northern Alabama.

Sipsey is Alabama's first National Wilderness Area, being designated as such by Congress in 1975. The Sipsey Wilderness originally contained 12,726 acres, and in 1988, Congress increased the area to 25,906 acres.

The 25,906 acre Sipsey Wilderness enjoys special protection designed to restore and preserve the natural ecological conditions of the area. The Sipsey provides the wilderness visitor with a primitive recreation experience and outstanding opportunities for solitude. Hiking, camping, hunting and fishing are permitted in the Sipsey. Horseback riding is allowed on trails specifically designated for horses. In order to protect the wilderness experience and environment, mountain bikes and motorized vehicles are not allowed inside the Sipsey's boundaries.

Sipsey is the third largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi, and the fight by Alabamians to gain "wilderness" status for the area is practically legendary (and has been the subject of an episode of "Discovering Alabama.")

This weekend (barring sickness), I will have the opportunity to explore the Sipsey with a couple of friends during a 14.8 mile out-and-back. I hope to have some great pictures to post in my "Almanac" next week!
