I have always enjoyed the Martin Luther King Jr. "I Have a Dream" speech. I believe even today, this speech is something that we all need to read and strive to achieve. No matter your color or religion, we are all in this together. We should all stand together as Americans, not as blacks, white, baptists, or catholics,l iberal or conservative.
This isn't the entire speech, just a few exerpts from it. I put the link to the entire speech at the bottom of the page. I highlighted in red some of my favorite passages from the speech.
Quote:
But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone

Quote:
I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.
This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring."
And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!
Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!
Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!
But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!
Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!
Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
And when this happens, When we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

I am sitting here in a hotel room in Birmingham, bored as hockeysticks! I thought I'd blog some thoughts away. I am listening to some old music from back when I was in highschool and soon after thinking of funny stuff in my life. Absolutely nothing is on TV right now, for once in my life, the internet was boring me. I forgot to bring any books with me this week....I will be glad to be home tomorrow. I miss my puppies and kitty cats. Although, the Starbucks right down the road is spoiling me slightly.
A new artist that I really like right now is Sara Bareilles, her album is called "Little Voice", very cool, only like $7.99 on itunes right now. The Maps albums is really good, so is the MuteMath album.
I am going to be an Auntie in a couple of days. It is kinda cool!
I hope it doesn't rain Saturday, I wanna go to the river really bad!
Goodness gracious, the song that just started playing on my computer is so GREAT! I haven't heard it in years...."Colt45 and two zig zags, baby that's all we need...."
If you didn't realize it, Tammy Faye Bakker Messner is still alive.

There are a few things I am very passionate about, family, music, politics, firefighting are some of them. Unfortunately the political future of this country is very uncertain. In this world today there are people that would love nothing more and do anything they could to see our livelihoods as Americans destroyed. The next leader of this country will play a more important role as ever to make sure that we are safe from the terrorists. I do not want Rudy Giuliani as that person. He is using the terrorists attacks of 9/11/01 to raise money. He thinks because he stood as the mayor of NYC on that day it gives him the credibility to run the country. Please watch this video put out by the IAFF. The firefighters of FDNY deserve more than what this man gave them. Our country deserves more than this man leading us on a platform built on lies.

Everyone settles for something. Like this song says, everyone has dreams, some will come true, some won't. This song really hit me hard the other day when I heard it. I really like Chris Knight and his songwriting, so much pain, but pain that any man would go through. Enjoy!
Knight Chris
Enough Rope
Well I work for the city in the town where I grew up.
Some days I run a backhoe some days I run a dump.
If I had other plans on my graduation day,
Then several years ago I guess I hauled ‘em all away.
Yeah I hauled ‘em all away.
She told me she was pregnant on the day I turned 18.
I did what your supposed to do. I bought her a ring.
He didn’t have to ask us, but he asked us anyway.
We stood up and said, “I do.” what else were we gonna say?
What else were we gonna say?
Well I’m thankful for the things I have,
And all the things I don’t.
And I’ve got dreams that will come true,
And I’ve got some that won’t.
Most the time I just walk the line wherever it goes.
‘Cuz you can’t hang yourself if you ain’t got enough rope.
My boss man is mad. I did just what he asked.
I mowed the courthouse lawn watched the prisoners walkin’ past
I’m happy to be working, instead of wearin’ chains.
Like my cousin Willy, he’s locked up in the grange.
He’s locked up in the grange.
But I’m thankful for the things I have,
And all the things I don’t.
And I’ve got dreams that will come true,
I’ve got some that won’t.
Most the time I just walk the line wherever it goes.
‘Cuz you can’t hang yourself if you ain’t got enough rope.
There’s a tavern down the highway, I go to drink some beers.
And wash down all I’m missin’ by hangin’ around here.
Then I drive back to the trailer; I’ll makeup with my wife.
I kiss my sleeping children, and I get on with my life.
Yeah I get on with my life.

It has been a while since I've done an album of the week. This week, an album came out that I was very excited about. Ryan Adams, Easy Tiger. Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! He resides in a genre that can be very confusing at times, alt country. He has a very "this sounds like country, but is much more meaningful feel to it" sound. He used to be part of another band, whose name escapes me and I don't want to be wrong on it, and then broke out into his solo carreer. He has put out lots of albums in the last few years, mostly with his backing band The Cardinals. I just have really started getting into his music. Tim McGraw even redid one of his songs, "When the Starts Go Blue". I dig him. I am eventually going to get all of his stuff. I hope you can check him out, maybe you'll like him too.
